Changes in Chemical Composition of Betung Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) after Alkali Immersion Treatment under Various Immersion Times

This research aimed to analyze the change in chemical composition of betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) strands after alkali immersion treatment under various times. The culms were converted into with target length, width, and thickness 70, 25, 0.5 mm, respectively. Strands immersion-treated 1% NaOH solution for 1, 2, 3 h. Preparation powder component analysis refers Technical Association Pulp Paper Industry (TAPPI) standard T 264 cm-07 regarding preparation wood test samples analysis. Structural non-structural strand components such as holocellulose, alpha-cellulose, hemicellulose, klason lignin, extractives analyzed. results showed that decreased hemicellulose content from 21.55% before 20.30% h immersion. Thus, it changed holocellulose alpha-cellulose composition. Alkali also extractive substances dissolved cold water, hot NaOH, ethanol-benzene solution. decrease molecular weight would be beneficial bamboo-oriented board manufacture improve adhesion, dimensional stability, mechanical properties, durability against biological agents attack.
